(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - According to a leading source in the Islamic bloc at Jenin’s Arab American University, the Islamic bloc has decided not to participate in student council elections this year, set to take place 8th May, because of the continuing arrests and chases against the bloc's members.

The source added that the Islamic bloc at the university had wanted to participate. Yet, unlike the other blocs, it has not received any guarantees ensuring freedom for its members.

The source pointed out that the activists in the Islamic bloc at the university received messages telling them that they will not be accepted in the student council even if they participate in the elections, which led the blocs' members to announce boycotting these "non-democratic" elections, as they called.

Meanwhile, the Muslim League, the student wing of the Islamic Jihad said that it will also be boycotting the Student Council Elections for the same reasons cited by the Islamic bloc.

In a press release, the League asserted that it would not participate in the nomination for several reasons; because there is no real atmosphere of competition in this elections, especially with the absence of students from the Islamic bloc, and because it did not receive any guarantees from higher authorities prohibiting harassment and persecution against its members.
